What to do after being sick, to feel better.

For me the last month has been a bit of a whirlwind! As much as it was a whirlwind in great ways with client work, workshops and side projects,  it was also filled with gut trouble. After eating out at a restaurant, I came down with some digestive issues that took me a week and a bit to start feeling like myself again.

As much as I like to think that I have an iron gut… whatever I ate was definitely stronger than what I thought I was.  It's annoying when we get caught with digestive issues like this, whether we are at home, out at a restaurant or (even more annoying) when we are travelling.

Have you been here before?

Here are some of the things that I did  and took to help me through this.

  1. Took a probiotic- This was the first go. Our immune system lives in our gut! Taking a probiotic helps to bring balance to our gut by adding in beneficial bacteria. By adding beneficial bacteria, this can help balance out the bad bacteria that had been introduced to our gut. This is especially crucial if we also were on antibiotics.

  2. Drank lots of nourishing liquids - This meant lots of teas! Two of my favourite ones to go between are Leaves tea Skin, and Lake & Oak Gut Love. I love Lake & Oak because of all the detoxing herbs that it includes in it. Skin tea is amazing because it has a lot of moistening and soothing herbs that are great for our skin and our digestive system. I also got a little break out at this time so the skin tea was doing double duty.

  3. Rest - It was a whirlwind of a month so this meant that even on days when it was go-go-go, I was making sure that when I was resting and I was actually resting. I made sure that when my body spoke to me, I was listening and giving it what it needed. Resting can look different from person to person, we just want to be sure that we aren't distracting ourselves.

  4. Focused on easy to digest foods - We want to stay away from high fiber foods and instead make foods that follow the low and slow method of cooking like. This way the nutrients are in a sense, predigested, and makes it easier for us to absorb. This means soups, stews, (bone)broths, bananas, congee and rice that are easy on the digestive tract.

  5. Took a digestive enzyme - When our digestive tract comes back to its regular state and we start to eat in our normal way again we can want to have extra support. Including a digestive enzyme not only helps support our digestive system but it also makes sure that we are breaking down our food properly to nourish our bodies. If you are taking a digestive enzyme on a regular basis, place note that there is still an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
